Calm, measured rest and the sound of waves are perhaps the most common associations that arise with the word "beach". This is not surprising, as relaxation is exactly what many beach travelers are looking for. If you associate your vacation primarily with such activity, choose one of the 1391 beaches in the country.

To make your choice easier, we have prepared a list of the best beaches for relaxation in France.

Attraction and Infrastructure

As for the main features of the beaches of France, they are as follows:

  • The country's beaches are mainly wide, moderate length and have a high level of cleanliness. The most common surface is sand of bright color.
  • Usually, entry into the water is moderately gentle, such beaches are 697.
  • An important clarification, 292 beaches in the country have a long intertidal zone, which means that during low tide hours you may have to travel a considerable distance. This is also something to consider if you don't want to suddenly be in the water at high tide.
  • The average distance from the road to beach in France is less than 500 meters. 1277 beaches are relatively easy to access, 81 beaches are difficult to access, which in most cases means that you have to walk a quite long distance, and 27 beaches are only accessible from the water. The latter include both island beaches and beaches with no land routes due to the natural borders.

Wild beaches with no infrastructure dominate the coastline of France however, even here you can find a beach with a standard set of accessories: sun beds, umbrellas, restaurants, showers and toilets.

Omaha Beach
8 Rami Tervo

This beach is truly unique, offering a fascinating blend of historical significance from the war era and breathtaking natural beauty. I took a refreshing swim and found it to be one of the finest beaches, despite the absence of showers or toilets. There were not many people swimming, but the beach itself had a lovely sandy shore and shallow waters.

Plage de Fautea
8 Simonis Aivaras

The beach is a charming little spot with calm waters that are perfect for a relaxing swim. However, it's worth noting that the ocean floor is rocky, so it may not be the most comfortable experience for your feet. During the peak season in August, the beach can get quite crowded, but it tends to clear out by around 7:30pm.

Plage de Gatseau

This beach is likely the best one on the island, especially in the southern half. There are ample parking spots and a food truck available, and the surrounding trees add to its aesthetic appeal, preventing it from looking like a barren desert meeting the ocean. It's an ideal spot for those traveling by car, bike, or on foot. Additionally, during low tide, it's the perfect location for on-foot fishing.

Saleccia Beach
10 Ethan Kessler

This beach is truly exceptional and has a fantastic location. The scenery is breathtaking, with crystal-clear water and white sand that will make you feel like you're in the Caribbean. While it can get crowded during the peak season, it's still worth a visit. You can reach it by 4-wheel drive from Casta or by boat from St. Florent, or by car, but without 4-wheel drive, the journey down the dirt road will take a few hours. There's a famous camping site close to the beach and a lovely beach restaurant hidden in the pine trees at the other end. It's definitely worth a visit.

Plage du Guesclin

We stumbled upon this beach whilst touring and never continued, we stayed all day. Its naturally beautiful.
