About Tenerife

At first glance, the diversity of the beaches of the Tenerife does not have a prominent distinctive feature. There is no clear predominance of mountain landscapes or crystal sea, on the contrary, everything seems balanced. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why the flow of tourists continues to grow from year to year.

Calm, measured rest and the sound of waves are perhaps the most common associations that arise with the word "beach". This is not surprising, as relaxation is exactly what many beach travelers are looking for. If you associate your vacation primarily with such activity, choose one of the 133 beaches in the island.

To make your choice easier, we have prepared a list of the best beaches for relaxation in Tenerife.

Attraction and Infrastructure

As for the main features of the beaches of Tenerife, they are as follows:

  • The island's beaches are mainly narrow, quite short and have a high level of cleanliness. The most common surface is sand of gray color.
  • Usually, entry into the water is moderately gentle, such beaches are 112.
  • The average distance from the road to beach in Tenerife is less than 500 meters. 108 beaches are relatively easy to access, 19 beaches are difficult to access, which in most cases means that you have to walk a quite long distance, and 5 beaches are only accessible from the water. The latter include both island beaches and beaches with no land routes due to the natural borders.

Wild beaches with no infrastructure dominate the coastline of Tenerife however, even here you can find a beach with a standard set of accessories: sun beds, umbrellas, restaurants, showers and toilets.

San Miguel de Abona

This place is a real gem, even though it's not much of a beach. People still flock here to sit on the rocks, take a dip in the sea, or even go fishing. There are plenty of renovations being done too, such as a pathway around the San Miguel coast. Although some restaurants are closed, La Marina 2 and a few others are still open for business. It's a great spot for a day out!

Playa de Las Gaviotas

This location is not suitable for naturists, but it's generally alright.

Playa el medano II

The beach was a sight to behold! Kite surfers were soaring across the waves, their colourful sails brightening up the horizon. It was a beautiful day, and the sand was soft and inviting. Be sure to keep an eye out for the kite lines, though - they were scattered around the beach, just waiting to be tripped over!

Fanabe Beach

This location is an amazing spot, boasting a wide stretch of sand and plenty of shops, restaurants and pubs nearby. It's easy to access the toilets and showers, and there's the added bonus of sunbeds and sunchairs available to rent. To guarantee you get one, you'll want to arrive early between 8 and 9, or you can even reserve one in advance. The sunbeds are great for families, as three people can easily fit on one. The cost for the first two rows is €80 (€35 for the sunbed plus €45 to use for food and drinks), and €60 for subsequent rows (€25 for the sunbed plus €35 for food and drinks). Sunchairs are also available and are around €7-€8 each, though they're not as comfortable as the sunbeds. Although the sunbeds may seem expensive, you would have spent that money on food and drinks anyway, so it's worth booking one

Playa de Los Cristianos

This location is absolutely amazing! It has a truly local atmosphere, and is equipped with all the necessities for a great day at the beach. Unlike other beaches that are usually overcrowded, this one is not, and there is a public restroom close by. With plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from, you can rent a day bed or just relax on the sand and enjoy the food of your choice. All in all, it's a great place to spend a day!

This beach, which seems to mainly serve as a home for the homeless (judging by the presence of tents), has the potential to be a hidden gem in the city. However, regrettably, it appears that nobody pays much attention to this place.

Please note that lifeguards supervise 29 beaches in the island, but you should rely on more than just them, remember the elementary rules, as lifeguards are not on duty around the clock, even on equipped beaches!

Finding hotels in relative proximity to the beaches is usually fine. Many beaches have enough nearby accommodation, which gives good opportunities to choose the right place to stay.

The hottest month of the island is September - air temperature during this time warms up to 24.1°C and water up to 24.3°C. The coldest month is January - air temperature drops to 19.4°C and water to 20.2°C.
