Amazing place for a swim, walk, run or to watch the sunset. Great open family beach. Amazing views of the mountains & house on the hills also planes landing at the nearby airport. Few ice cream vendors at the parking, loads of parking! Makes Nelson a great place to live

The beach is absolutely stunning, although it's important to note that dogs are not allowed on most parts of the beach. However, there is a designated area where they are permitted. It's advisable to check online for more information to avoid any surprises. I've personally visited on calm days, and it's a wonderful spot for children. The lack of big waves during this time makes it perfect for them, and the waters are shallow enough for them to play in safely. Additionally, there are several playgrounds nearby that cater to different age groups, as well as an animal park (which requires an admission fee), a water park, mini golf, go-karts, and more. The options are truly endless. Conveniently, there are public toilets near the beach, and there are also various food choices within walking distance or a short drive away. The best part is that parking is free in the carparks. Furthermore, there are accommodation options available within walking distance as well.

Cable Bay, located approximately 18km northeast of Nelson, is definitely worth a visit. It provides stunning views, a safe swimming environment, opportunities for kayaking and hiking. A narrow causeway connects the mainland to Pepin Island, and there is a small parking area and toilet facilities available. Adjacent to the car park, you will find a set of wooden stairs that mark the beginning of the Cable Bay to Glenduan walkway, an 8km hike through farmland that offers breathtaking views. If you're not up for the entire hike, you can still enjoy the best parts by walking a few hundred meters to a viewpoint and information board that provides the area's history. As you ascend, the views only get better. The name Cable Bay originates from its historical significance as the site of the first overseas cable link between New Zealand and Australia in 1876. For optimal photography, the afternoon or early evening is the ideal time.

Glenduan Reserve is located 18 km from Nelson and is a beautiful, restful place to relax. It's a great spot for dog walks and seal spotting. There is a walking area along the side of the beach, and the reserve features two playgrounds, a skateboard area, toilets, a children's play area with a flying fox, and plenty of parking. The beach at Glenduan is very rocky. You can also reach Cable Bay from here, either via the beach or the 8 km Cable Bay Walkway that goes over the hill. The area is a Marine Reserve, so no fishing, netting, taking, or killing of marine life is allowed, and the removal of any natural material from the reserve is prohibited.
