We visited this beach during a time when there was a change in management, and I believe that the issues we encountered have likely been resolved by now. Initially, I had paid for a budget-friendly 4-hour fishing trip in the archipelago with a local guide and small boat before our arrival. Unfortunately, that didn't work out as planned. The owner informed us that we might have a subpar experience because they had a new inexperienced guide who was unfamiliar with the waters. They suggested upgrading to the premier boat with a highly skilled expert for an additional $800. My husband agreed, but during dinner, we were approached and told that this amount wasn't enough, and an extra $500 was required to cover the cost of fuel. At a total cost of $1700 now, my husband decided to cancel the plan (excluding the expenses for our accommodation and food/bar tab, of course).
Furthermore, the catamaran had been damaged by lightning and needed repairs. The option of a horseback ride into the interior of the island with a picnic lunch was also unavailable since the woman who owned the other property was no longer associated with them. Needless to say, I was disappointed by the limited activity choices.
On a positive note, Jessica and Fernando provided excellent service in the charming and cozy restaurant. The food was definitely of superior quality, and the remote location of the island was truly memorable. I intended to reach out to Frommers and share our mixed reviews, as it seemed that Cala Mia was possibly in the process of transforming into a more renowned destination for sport fishing. However, as a casual island retreat, this small resort did not disappoint.
Lastly, it was unfortunate that on the one night out of our five-night stay, a group of four fishing enthusiasts who had a successful day came into the dining room and were loud, celebratory, and obnoxious. It made us feel like second-class customers.

Cala Mia is like a paradise filled with pleasure and happiness. David and his team, including Gladis, Yaneth, Gube, Tati, Mykal, and others, are incredibly attentive, caring, and fun. They ensured that our group of four had everything we needed for a fantastic stay, from delicious meals to relaxing massages, island tours, and enjoyable conversations.
Moreover, the fishing experience was outstanding. We managed to catch a blue marlin, two black marlins, numerous snappers, rainbow runner, and more. Tati is an exceptional captain, Gube is easily the best deck hand and first mate I've ever sailed with, and the boat itself is incredibly comfortable. If you're looking for the ultimate offshore fishing experience, Cala Mia is the place to be!
We will genuinely miss the Cala Mia Resort and its team, and we're already counting down the days until we can return!
