Focussing on the south coast, in addition to Slapton we'll visit Plymouth, where some 36,000 GI's departed. Plymouth is said to be the most bombed city in WWII (per sq mile) more than London and Coventry and is still the largest naval dockyard in Western Europe. Down the coast the picturesque coastal town of Dartmouth is home to two stunningly preserved castles at the mouth of the River Dart as well as Britannia Naval College, home to US naval command and where Queen Elizabeth first set eyes on the Duke of Edinburgh. In Zombie Scavengers of Plymouth, players will use an app to try to survive a zombie apocalypse. A tour of Swanaford Vineyard gives visitors a fascinating insight into growing grapes and making wine in England. Visitors will walk through the vines, seeing the five varieties that we grow on site, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier which are the traditional champagne grapes. A visit in the spring will allow visitors to see the vines emerging from winter hibernation, with new shoots forming on the recently pruned vines. In high summer or early autumn, expect lots of vigorous growth and, of course, grapes!
