St. Croix holds one of the most powerful and untold freedom stories in the entire Caribbean — and almost no one knows it. On July 3, 1848, a formerly enslaved man named Moses "Buddhoe" Gottlieb led 8,000 enslaved people in a nonviolent march to Fort Frederik and demanded their freedom. The Danish governor surrendered. Every single person was freed that day — the only successful nonviolent slave revolt leading to immediate emancipation in Caribbean history. His co-conspirator was a man named Admiral Martin King. Over 100 years later, a preacher named Martin Luther King Jr. would use the same strategy to change America. Same name. Same strategy. Different century. This 2.5-hour walking tour brings that story to life through 5 historic stops in Frederiksted, guided by a passionate local storyteller. You will never look at St. Croix the same way again.
