Once an old grazing land, thankfully the Anglican church in partnership with Bangalow Land and Rivercare Group have regenerated this area with hundreds of native plant species that are really important to Bundjalung people. During the tour, Delta points out a variety of these edible bush tucker plants, as well as plants used for natural medicine, jewellery, fibre, tools and weapons. She speaks about local indigenous history and shares traditional stories that have been passed down to her from her ancestors. There are opportunities to learn some Bundjalung language and we are sometimes lucky to see Binging the river turtle or Junbung the platypus.

Byron & Ballina 4WD Adventure Tour No other tour lets you take the wheel and truly feel the thrill of off‑road driving. Your adventure begins in Byron Bay before heading south to Ballina, where you’ll step into the driver’s seat. Cruise along the untouched sands of Airforce Beach and 10 Mile Beach, surf pristine waves, and enjoy a laid‑back beach BBQ surrounded by the raw beauty of Bunjalung National Park. After lunch, the journey turns inland to Gibberagee State Forest. Here, the terrain gets tougher—rutted tracks, creek crossings, and winding forest trails deliver a genuine 4WD challenge. See platypus in their natural habitat. It is possible to see platypus at any time of the day, but our best chance is just after dawn. We pick you up from your Byron Bay accommodation and drive to the special platypus area. From there we start our 2 km easy walk along the creek looking for platypus. We usually see one or two platypus, and loads of birds. After watching the platypus have their breakfast we relax with ours – a picnic by the creek – before returning to Byron Bay. We can’t guarantee platypus sightings on this tour, but don’t worry. If we don’t see them we take you on another day, free. Our Wildlife Safari takes you to three different habitats near Byron Bay. You’ll visit eucalyptus forest, rainforest and grassland to discover the animals that live there.
