We are a married couple with extensive diving experience—thousands of dives between the two of us— and we’ve had the opportunity to dive all over the world. During our trip to Mafia Island, we completed 22 dives each, including 4 incredible night dives, and Mafia Island Diving quickly became our absolute favorite dive center. If we ever opened our own dive operation, we would want to run it exactly like they do. Before our trip, I reached out to all the local dive centers for information, and Mafia Island Divers stood out immediately. The level of detail they went into answering my questions gave me the confidence that I was making the right choice. They were clearly knowledgeable, thorough, and genuinely passionate about providing a top-notch diving experience, which set them apart from the others. From the moment we arrived, the staff was incredibly friendly and professional, ensuring that we felt at home throughout our stay. The dive sites were excellent, and MID tailored the experience to our interests, particularly macro photography. They made sure to take us to dive sites that were perfect for capturing those tiny marine creatures. Our guide, Ibra, was excellent—his ability to find nudibranchs and other macro life made each dive a unique experience. Safety was a top priority throughout our time with Mafia Island Divers. We know that some people might be concerned about safety in Africa, but we felt completely at ease. The crew was exceptionally well-trained, and everything was organized with safety in mind. The rental equipment (which we didn’t use, but saw) was clearly well-maintained. The breathing air compressor was well-maintained, which gave us confidence in the operation's commitment to best practices. One of the standout aspects of Mafia Island Diving is their commitment to developing local talent and promoting community development. We saw firsthand how they are dedicated to creating opportunities for local people, from training new divers to offering employment opportunities at the center. This emphasis on community development not only helps improve the lives of the local people but also enhances the dive experience by ensuring a high level of professionalism and passion for diving. It was inspiring to see how deeply the crew cared about the community and the environment. Another highlight was the small group sizes—we were never in a group of more than four people, which allowed for a more personalized and focused experience. The staff went above and beyond, even sending out extra boats to deliver us food during multiple dives on the same day without returning to shore. They also did a fantastic job managing the groups, with advanced divers separated from beginners and photographers grouped together, ensuring that each diver got the attention they needed. We often felt like we had a private guide, which made the experience even more enjoyable. We didn't take any courses while on Mafia, but had the opportunity to see a few being conducted, and we also talked to the students about their experiences. As a fellow instructor, I can say without any doubts that the instructors at MID are providing a top-tier level of instruction. It's extremely rare that I visit a dive center and can't think of a single critique to give, but that was the case here. Mafia Island Divers is by far the best dive center we’ve encountered, and we can’t recommend them highly enough. If you’re planning a trip to Mafia Island, don’t miss the opportunity to dive with them. It’s an experience we won’t forget, and we look forward to diving with them again in the future!
