The Normandy landings took place on the 6th June 1944 during World War II. The landings represented the Allied invasion to take back Europe. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D Day, it is the largest seaborne invasion in history. The operation began the liberation of France from Germany. The invasion laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front and the defeat of Hitlers Germany.
There is little remaining from D Day to see today, the beaches are thronged with tourists enjoy the seas side.
