The beach is nice, although it does have some rocks. However, it is still an enjoyable beach. It's a great place to bring your dog, as they are welcome. Additionally, there are plenty of picnic tables and grills located behind the beach. The walk from the parking lot to the picnic area and beach is a bit of a distance, but it's not too far.
The water is clean, making it suitable for kids to swim or play. The park is open and free of charge. The water has waves, and the air is fresh, making it a nice place to relax.
The area was fantastic. The beach itself was amazing. We decided to stroll along the beach for a while to find a less crowded spot. We had to wear water shoes because of the sand and rocks. We spent the entire day having a great time in the water.
This beach is definitely my favorite spot for rockhounding in Michigan. If you're planning to spend the day at the beach, make sure to check out the Lakeport State Park Day Use Area. There's also a campground with the same name about a mile away. To access the beach, you'll need to park and cross a pedestrian bridge over a busy street. It's worth noting that the bridge is not ADA accessible. I arrived at 10:30 am on a Thursday and had the beach all to myself for a good hour. While there are restrooms, plenty of picnic tables, swings, and a slide, they are actually located in the grass park area and not visible from the beach.
This is one of our preferred beaches to visit due to its spaciousness and beautiful shoreline. However, it's worth noting that the beach has a rocky shoreline and the waves can be quite powerful. To ensure safety, I made sure to bring water shoes and provided floaties and lifejackets for the little ones during our last visit. On our most recent trip (06/02/23), we noticed a sign indicating a water line break and that the bathrooms were out of order. However, we didn't encounter any problems when using the facilities.
