This beach is a true gem! The sand and water are pristine, making for a perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun. What's more, it's not overly crowded, so you can enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings. The beach is also equipped with picnic tables, making it a great place to enjoy a meal with loved ones. And if you're looking for an overnight adventure, there are plenty of camping grounds to choose from. This was the first beach we visited on the Big Island, and we're already planning our next trip back. 🌴🌊

The beach is stunning and has a lot of variety. The volunteers at the top are extremely friendly and well-organized, efficiently managing the busy parking situation and offering helpful guidance to newcomers. However, they should make it clear that the sacred burial grounds are not marked, so visitors should be extra cautious not to wander onto them. On leaving, visitors can contribute to the donation box to support the preservation efforts. The hike down to the beach is steep and heavily trafficked, and the return trip is equally challenging. The descent covers a distance of 0.7 miles and drops 550 feet. The beach itself boasts beautiful black sand that has been there for nearly 900 years. As you move further away from the entrance, the crowds thin out, and by the end, there are very few people around. Additionally, after 2pm, the beach seems to clear out significantly.

Upon our visit, we regrettably did not have our snorkeling equipment on hand. Nevertheless, we observed a multitude of individuals engaging in the activity. From our vantage point, we were able to clearly distinguish a plethora of fish, affirming that this location is indeed a favorable spot for snorkeling. We eagerly anticipate our return, equipped with the necessary gear to fully immerse ourselves in this aquatic adventure.

While passing through, we made a pit stop at this beach and were pleasantly surprised. It's a charming local spot that's perfect for families with little ones, thanks to the shallow area that's great for kids to splash around in. For the more adventurous, there are designated areas for boogie boarding and surfing, but these are best left to the experienced. The beach also boasts some lovely BBQ areas and covered buildings that are perfect for enjoying a meal. Plus, if you fancy a tipple, you'll be pleased to know that drinking is allowed between 10am and 10pm.
