Day trip from Kolkata for a Slice of Europe

12 godzin
Darmowa anulacja

The Hooghly River north of Kolkata holds a compelling story. Within forty kilometres, three European nations built towns, churches, and trading houses on the same banks—the French at Chandannagar, the Portuguese at Bandel, and the Danes at Serampore—competing for influence over the Mughal Empire’s wealthiest province. This private day trip takes you through all three settlements. At Chandannagar, walk through Dupleix Palace, where French governors plotted the downfall of the British, and see Patalbari, the mansion that hosted Tagore. At Bandel, visit Bengal’s oldest European church (1660), where blossoms grow among the graves of Portuguese traders. At Serampore, see the college where William Carey founded Asia’s first university and printed the first Bengali newspaper in 1818. Everything is private: your group, a cultural guide, an air-conditioned car, and a traditional lunch. One day. Three centuries. Three countries. One river. A journey through a forgotten corridor of history.

Gangasagar beach, also known as Sagar beach, is a coastal area located on Sagardwip (Sagar Island), at the point where the Ganges River meets the Bay of Bengal. The distance from kachuberia ferry ghat to gangasagar sea beach is 28.8km and the distance from Benuban is 12km. You can reach kachuberia ferry ghat from Kakdwip Lot 8 ferry terminal and Benuban from Namkhana/Narayanpur ferry terminal. The distance from Manasadwip Ramakrishna Mission is 9.2km. Kapil Muni ashrama is situated facing the Gangasagar beach. If you visit on any normal day then there are no changing rooms as such on the beach. There are makeshift places covered with cloth. The beach is rugged and eroded in many places. It is not safe during high tide as the waves can get quite big and sea water reaches the road and even the Kapil Muni temple. There are a few vendors selling sea-shells, conch, and other sea products. You can find a few tea stalls. If you visit in off-season then you can have the entire beach to yourself. It is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus. There is even a saying in Bengali, "সব তীর্থ বারবার গঙ্গা সাগর একবার | জয়ন্তী " or in Hindi "बाकी तीरथ बार बार, गंगसागर एक बार". The literal transalation is "Other pilgrimages (are done) many times, Gangasagar (is visited) once". This phrase depicts how holy Gangasagar is where the holy Ganges meets the ocean after a journey of thousands of kilometres right from Gaumukh. This is the site for one of the most important hindu festivals in the world known as the "Gangasagar mela". In fact, it is the second largest human gathering in the world, after the Kumbh Mela and takes place during Makar Sankranti (mid-January) each year. Pilgrims and sadhus visit Gangasagar to take a holy dip in the confluence of river Ganga and the sea, believing it leads to spiritual upliftment. There is a mention of this event in Indian epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and its existence can be dated back to 400 BCE.

Visited on 2022, it is a very secret place to bath in Makar sankranti. The Sagar Beach is located on the tip of the Sagardwip, which is popularly known as Gangasagar to most pilgrims across the world. The beach is flooded with lakhs of tourists every year as they make their way to Sagardwip for a holy dip in the Ganges. Apart from being part of an iconic religious pilgrimage, the pristine beach is a calm, soothing place to enjoy a sunset. Sea beach is a mix of sand and soil. Boat journey to Ganganagar is a adventurous and memorable experience.

Gangasagar Beach is a very vast beach where people gather every year around Gangasagar Mela to bathe. The beach is very big and there are no restrictions there. You can go and bathe as you wish. It doesn't has dry sand like other beaches. Instead, it has black soil like sand. One thing is that it doesn't has much facilities if you go in off season but during mela time it's very festive and beautiful.

The location offers a stunning view and is a spiritually significant place. However, the government needs to improve cleanliness, especially around the beach area, as it's not well-maintained. Additionally, there is a lack of employment opportunities in the region, which has led to widespread poverty among the locals. As a result, many are desperate for work and may resort to desperate measures for money. Therefore, creating job opportunities is crucial to improve the community's well-being.
