Our stay at the Hyatt Regency in San Juan was filled with disappointments that made the high price completely unjustifiable.
To start, the fire alarm went off two nights in a row while we were sleeping, and the hotel didn’t remove the person responsible until after the second incident. That’s a serious lack of regard for guest safety and comfort.
The resort nickel-and-dimes you constantly. Tip is automatically added—even for something as simple as a soda at the bar. Dining is extremely expensive, and you’ll pay $4–$5 per non-alcoholic drink with no refills. When we tried to eat at Nectar (with a reservation), we were told we’d have to wait 30 minutes past our scheduled time to be seated. The host showed no care or professionalism.
The double rooms have full-size beds—not queens. So if you’re staying as a couple, don’t expect to sleep comfortably together. Definitely not what you’d expect at this price point.
They offer golf carts to help guests get around the large resort, but don’t rely on them. We called for a ride that never came, while several employees with carts were just chatting in the lobby. Completely inefficient and frustrating.
We also asked for just a one-hour late checkout and were told it would cost $25. On top of that, expect to spend a lot on Ubers, as the hotel is far from most restaurants, attractions, and nicer beaches.
And about that beach—it’s right on the property and completely overrun with seaweed. Not clean, not enjoyable, and not the tropical experience you expect from a Caribbean resort.
Bottom line: You pay a premium, but you don’t get premium service, quality, or value. Look elsewhere—this place rides on the Hyatt name but fails to deliver a basic, comfortable guest experience.
