Having left Kaikourā we decided to head to Wards Beach. Ward Beach is off State Highway 1 with with a short drive on a compact gravel road on which a farmer and his dog were moving some mighty fine specimens of prime beef. Ward Beach has a few car parks, a toilet and there looks to be a campsite available to use. I don't think it's free as it's in a fenced area. You would have google to find out how or if you can stay. We enjoyed walking up and down the beach to the Ward Boulders and all the awesume rock formations.

We come here often as we live 40 mins away. All the family love it here and is a great day out for us. Bring a picnic! As fires are banned normally at this time of the year (summer) in this area - and a large part of NZ - I'm not sure if you can use a BBQ. There's a lovely cafe on the main road in Ward, with toilets, gas station and a large carpark.

Becareful on the road to there. There is a "cattle stop" which doesn't tell you optimal speed level to cross it. Id recommend the lowest speed possible as it's much worse than a speed bump. Also encountered a sheep on the road with her 2 babies and they had trouble getting out of the way so take extra caution for random animals. The beach is very rocky and can be windy but overall beautiful

Stunning beach and great place to pick up colored stones. Also met a seal, gave us a hella fright as we were looking at the ground for stones and almost walked into his sleep spot. But he was chill. Other wise just loved the scenery.
